Trademark Assignment Legalization
A Trademark Assignment is a legal document transferring ownership or rights of a registered trademark from one entity to another. For this transfer to be recognized and enforced within the United Arab Emirates, the document must be officially legalized by the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C. Legalization ensures that the document’s authenticity, signatures, and issuing authorities are verified according to UAE legal and administrative standards.
When It’s Required
Legalization of a Trademark Assignment is required when a U.S.-issued trademark transfer is intended for official or commercial use in the UAE. Common situations include:
Registering or transferring trademark ownership in the UAE.
Filing trademark documentation with the UAE Ministry of Economy.
Submitting ownership proof in corporate mergers, acquisitions, or licensing arrangements.
Presenting trademark rights during legal, contractual, or intellectual property proceedings in the UAE.
Legalization Process
All Trademark Assignment documents originating from the United States must complete the full authentication chain before legalization at the UAE Embassy:
Notarization: The Trademark Assignment must first be notarized by a licensed Notary Public.
State Authentication: The notarized document must then be authenticated by the Secretary of State in the state where it was issued.
U.S. Department of State Authentication: Once state authentication is complete, the document must be certified by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.
